In the most recent editions, between 25 and 34 sports have been included in the official program. Several sports or disciplines that were on the program of The World Games have been discontinued because they are now included in the programme of the Olympic Games. Around 3500 participants from around 100 nations take part.

Since 1993 at The Hague, an athlete party has been held in the middle of the competition. : 270 It was intended to allow all athletes to participate in at least one ceremony (opening, athlete party, or closing) during the competition.

Old World can be vexing at first given how much more there is to manage on top of the usual 4X concerns we’ve gotten used to in the past decade or so, and the UI can feel cluttered as you’re trying to piece it all together. But crucially, none of that added complexity comes without added rewards. The richness and human element that mortal characters and noble families bring is well worth coming to grips with all of the extra mechanics they introduce. Limiting your ability to give orders not only cuts down on long turn times in the late game, but opens up new strategies for playing tall or making the most of a less than great start position. It’s a fine balancing act, and while Old World doesn’t really become a « Civ killer, » I don’t think it’s trying to be. For those who have the patience to master it, it’s a satisfying and deep 4X that could generate interesting stories for ages to come.

The game actually made it out of Early Access in July 2021, but with it only just now coming out on Steam, I figured this was the perfect time to revisit and see what’s up. Here’s how I introduced the game a couple of years ago:

New world video game

In my initial previews, I wagered New World would be a far more compact game than it appeared to be when it finally came out. But now I’m starting to agree with everyone who dragged me for the line I previously said about “dungeons in droves,” which you can find in my Amrine Excavation preview from back in May. It made sense to me at the time – I was comparing New World to Destiny 2 in my head, based on how simplistic New World’s action combat struck me as during that preview event – but now, after 170+ hours logged on my main character (and over 240 hours logged between both the main and press versions I own on Steam, which also accounts for the amount of time I spent waiting in queues), I think it’s time for me to walk that sentiment back and call it a lesson learned.

Notably, preorders for New World: Aeternum are live now, with a $59.99 Standard Edition and a pricier $79.99 Deluxe Edition available on both Xbox Series X|S and PS5. The Deluxe Edition includes the Corrupted Mauler Bear mount — it sounds like the developers did something about all those complaints about running since I’ve been gone — and the Corrupted Soul Armor skin; preordering any version of New World: Aeternum will grant you the Azoth Stalker Wolf mount. This new version of New World is not yet purchasable on PC, however.

Right now, the only items featured on this in-game microtransaction store are cosmetic; there are assortments of dyes, housing items, emotes, costumes, and weapon skins that cost anywhere from “free” to up to 25,000 Marks. It had previously leaked that Amazon Games planned to include “conveniences” such as XP boosters in its microtransaction store, but it then received pushback for this (now scrapped) model. Amazon appears to have settled on keeping New World’s microtransaction store limited to cosmetics for the time being.
