The story of my first campaign in Old World, where I led my Greek civilisation to global domination, is equally the story of Rome, my greatest nemesis in this sprawling turn-based 4X. When I first encountered the Romans, they were extremely friendly, offering us gifts and hospitality, but it was a poisoned chalice—quite literally. A sickness spread, and Roman gestures of friendship were the source. I demanded justice and compensation; Rome only wanted war. It would take nearly 200 years until I got my revenge.

Old World is a historical strategy game where you lead your empire through multiple generations, building a grand legacy to last beyond your own years. This is an era of great leaders, from the revered to the feared. Which will you be?

The wars you’ll fight across these maps are definitely a highlight of Old World. And unlike the other new features, they add a lot of depth without adding much complexity. Axemen have a cleave that can deal reduced damage to anyone close to their primary target. Simple. Cavalry get to attack again if they kill a unit. Spearmen are the only guys that can stop cavalry in their tracks, as mounted units normally ignore zone of control rules. None of these abilities require multiple paragraphs of text to understand or come with an armload of edge cases, but the possibilities for using them in concert are great, much like a game of chess. And the AI is generally much more capable of understanding and employing those ideas than anything I’ve seen in Civ 6, even after its years of patches.
